Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (1990-2002) R129

The Mercedes-Benz R129 roadster marked a new era for the Mercedes SL-Class, replacing the Mercedes R107 when it made its debut at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. Known for its striking design, this two-door roadster was an eye-catching entry into the Sports Car / Grand Tourer class with its FR (front-engine, rear wheel drive) layout, an automated (electro-hydraulic) collapsible textile roof and smooth yet brash styling from designer Bruno Sacco, with all the angles and elegance that has come to typify this period. Some innovations of the era include being one of the first fully automated convertible tops in the industry, having the option for electronically controlled damping (Adaptive Damping System, ADS) and a pop-up roll bar. 1994 marked the change from the 500 SL becoming the SL 500, while the 1995 R129 boasted a minor facelift, the 1997 R129 saw a panoramic roof option, and the 1999 R129 went through another minor facelift. The R230 SL-Class eventually replaced the R129 roadster, but special edition offerings like the Mille Miglia Edition, Silver Arrow Edition, 1997 40th Anniversary Roadster Edition, La Costa Edition, SL 320 Sport Model and more levering the 129 body, always harkened back to the iconic legend of this car.

Fun fact: Only 213,089 of these Mercedes R129 roadsters have ever been built!
