Valve springs are used to provide constant tension on the valves. Without them, the valves would make contact with the tops of the pistons and cause damage. It's a good idea to have your old valve springs checked by your machine shop to make sure that they have the correct spring tension. If they do not meet the correct specifications, you should replace them with new ones.
