The tolerances between the valves and pistons on some engines are very narrow, and this potentially disastrous dance between parts is all kept in harmony by the timing belt and tensioners. Timing Belt Tensioners
Timing belt tensioners are used to keep a constant tension on the belts. Slippage of the belt can result in catastrophic contact between the valves and pistons.
